Music in Schools (York) co-ordinates instrumental tuition and examination entries for the Music for Schools Foundation in the City of York & throughout North Yorkshire.

There are many benefits and advantages in learning a musical instrument, including heightened intelligence, achievement and friendship. Taking up an instrument is a challenge, but one that is very rewarding.

Lessons

Our teaching scheme is specifically designed for primary school children (KS2), who learn in small groups at their school.Lessons are planned using the Standard of Excellence teaching scheme and accompanying cd, which has been specifically written for group learning, promoting 'enjoyment through achievement'. All Music in Schools York teachers are fully CRB checked and have undergone a training program including training in child protection.

What can I learn?

We offer tuition on: Clarinet, Flute, Saxophone, Cornet and Trumpet.You can use a family instrument if you have one already. Alternatively, instruments can be obtained through one of the instrument packages supplied through Normans, the largest provider of brass and woodwind instruments in the UK.

There are three ways in which you can enrol your child for lessons with Music in Schools York.

Rental Package

This is the ideal package for parents wanting to give their child the opportunity to start lessons without the need for a large upfront payment. Normans Musical Instruments provides a package for Music in Schools (York) pupils. The package includes:•Hire of Instrument – Complete with case and any essential accessories.•Standard of Excellence Tuition Book – includes CD for practicing at home.•A Music Stand •A Book Bag•Maintenance Agreement – If the instrument doesn’t work, simply send it to Normans and their technicians will fix it for you. (Excludes wilful damage, negligence or cosmetic damage.)• Free DeliveryPayments are made monthly by Direct Debit and after 24 payments the instrument is yours to keep. However, after 3 payments have been made the instrument can be returned to Normans at any time with no further commitment.Depending on the instrument your child has chosen the monthly Hire charge is as follows:Instrument Monthly Hire ChargeCornet, Trumpet, Mini Clarinet, Clarinet and Flute £12.90Curved Headed Flute and Saxophone £14.75Lessons are then charged at the discounted rate of £57.00 per term.If you would like to opt for this option click the 'Order Rental Package Now' button.You will be taken to the Pupil Registration Area and then a link to the Normans Rental Package Order Page.
Purchase Package

Purchase Package

The Purchase Package gives parents who would prefer to pay up-front a safety net just in case their child decides that the chosen instrument is not for them. Normans Musical Instruments provides a bespoke package tailored to the needs of Music in Schools York pupils with the option to return. Instrument PackageThe package includes:•Purchase of Instrument Complete with case and any essential accessories.•Standard of Excellence Tuition Book includes CD for practicing at home.•A Music Stand •A Book Bag•Buyback Option Return the instrument within 6 months of your first lesson and Normans will refund 75% of the original purchase price. (Instrument must be in good condition but allowances are made for general wear and tear.)•Maintenance Agreement If the instrument doesnt work, simply send it to Normans and their technicians will fix it for you. (Excludes cosmetic/wilful damage or negligence)•Free DeliveryDepending on the instrument your child has chosen the Purchase Package price is as follows:Instrument Purchase Price Cornet, Trumpet, Mini Clarinet, Clarinet and Flute : £215.00 Curved Headed Flute and Saxophone : £269.00 TuitionLessons are Paid directly to Music in Schools (York) and you will be invoiced on a Termly basis (Typically 10 lessons per term) at the current rate of £57.00 per term.Please press the 'I would like the Purchase Package' button at the top of this page if you would like to take advantage of this package.After you have completed your child's details and paid for your first term of tuition you will then be directed to the Normans Musical Instruments website to make a payment for your instrument.

'Enjoyment through achievement' is a phrase that sums up our philosophy, and earning an ABRSM certificate is a rewarding experience. We recognise that if your child is working hard to make progress with their music they need some way of recognising their success and reassurance that they are on the right road. ABRSM music exams are taken by over 600,000 students throughout the world each year and so provide the benchmarks for the measurement of musical achievement.When our teacher decides that your child is ready to sit an exam they will give them a letter containing details about the exam and fact sheet for you to read.Once you have read the fact sheet and understand the conditions of entry you then simply need to click on the button at the bottom of this page to make an entry.Before making your entry you will need to know the following information:Which grade they are taking?What instrument are they playing?Your credit or debit card to hand in order to pay

Lessons only

Some parents will have access to an instrument within their family or may prefer siblings to share and in this case you only need to enrol for lessons.

Music in Schools York lessons are priced at £62.00 per term (£6.20 per lesson) and you will be required to pay for your first term upon enrolment.

You will also need to purchase the relevant Tutor book(s) for your instrument, details of which can be found at Normans.
